Background

ATIFTAP was founded following the completion of a UNDP/ITC regional project titled "Strengthening the Training Institutions in the Foreign Trade Sector." On February 28, 1991 six of the ten participating institutions decided to form an association to continue and expand the modest network of institutions founded by the project. ATIFTAP was inaugurated in Bangkok on June 27, 1992.

ATIFTAP aims to foster cooperation between the training institutions and export/trade promotion agencies in the Asia Pacific region; represent its members with governments and other institutions; organize, promote and sponsor workshops, exchange programmes, joint research projects, conferences and technical cooperation projects.

ATIFTAP is administered by a Board of Directors. The day to day affairs of the Association are managed by the Secretary General's office. The Board appoints the Secretary General, programs the activities of the Association, accepts full, associate and honorary members, and can recommend the suspension or termination of membership. Up until January 1995, membership was restricted to thirty by a board decision. New members can now be admitted pending Board's approval.

Vision

In December 1991 at the closing of the last workshop conducted by RAS/86/019 in Karachi, Dr. Osman A. Atac, Secretary General, stated the vision of ATIFTAP as:

ATIFTAP envisions a roof under which foreign trade trainers can play a significant role in fostering foreign trade by networking and exchange of information and wisdom.

ATIFTAP envisions all countries of the Asia-Pacific Region to have trade training/promotion capabilities, which derive their strength from a regional network.

ATIFTAP envisions an Association, which is a leading voice in foreign trade policy determination in the region.

ATIFTAP envisions to prove that people who look, eat, dress differently, who worship different beliefs, and have different political systems can work together for the ultimate goal of providing a better life for everybody and the generations to come.

Never in its history the world was so ready for change and it has never been so important to act quickly and diligently. The world is getting ready for the 21st century: politically, economically but most importantly intellectually. Information which was unimaginable twenty years ago is now available. Information which is not imaginable today will be available within the next decade. Conducting business, production, exporting, importing, will not be the same. In a new world where electronic signals replace money, documents, signatures, skilled and unskilled labor and professionals; business functions like production, accounting, marketing will change drastically. In this new order, knowledge will be a factor of production by itself. Trainers and promoters of foreign trade must get ready to change the way they look at the present and prepare themselves and others for this future. As trainers in foreign trade, it is their responsibility to inform themselves and their constituents about these upcoming developments. It is their responsibility for they are entrusted with the task of bringing about change. Efforts of change are blocked by ignorance. Constructive change can only be introduced with knowledge.

Management

ATIFTAP is managed by a Board of Directors elected by the members from among the directors of member institutions. The new and interim Board has been reconstituted on August 26, 2003.
